Canine musical freestyle is a dog sport that combines basic obedience skills, creative movement and tricks into a choreographed routine set to music. Freestyle is a way to improve your dog’s focus, attention, confidence and motivation and have fun at the same time. Freestyle is all about joyful teamwork. The best freestyle routines look like the dog and handler are reading each other’s minds and the dance was made just for that particular song. Any size, breed, age or ability of dog can play, but your dog should have had at least one training class prior to trying freestyle.
Freestyle is a unique and deceptively difficult sport that combines precision, energy, thinking and creativity. But with a solid foundation in a few core skills, you and your dog can do most anything your imagination can cook up. And it just so happens these foundational skills will carry over to other dog sports too! This is a four week class is designed to teach you and your dog the basic freestyle positions, basic floor patterns and kick start that laser focus and attention that is so important to the sport. All freestyle teams will start their dance career here.
During this 6-week course we'll continue to strengthen your freestyle foundation skills, but now we'll start adding some of the core freestyle moves such as twists and spins, circles, weaves and more creative floor patterns. You'll also learn how to perform moves and move patterns timed to music, which is harder than it looks! Students that complete this class are eligible to start performing simple routines with the Texas Six-Steppers at local freestyle demonstrations.
During this 6-week course we'll expand the freestyle foundation moves to include more advanced skills and tricks such as backing, front passes, side passes, distance work, and more complex creative heelwork. We’ll continue to build your dog’s motivation, focus and attention, but we'll also improve your dog’s thinking skills for learning new creative moves that showcase your dog's unique personality.
